Having been born in a strange space between Gen X and Gen Y or the Millenials, or whatever the name is now, I’ve always felt left out. Too un-slackery to be Gen X, to cynical to be a Millenial, I literally was born halfway into the year that often is used to separate the two generations (1977).

Now, I have discovered, I am not alone. I wonder what my generation will be known for? A quick primer on how each succeeding generation has been viewed provides some hints:

Baby Boomers: Spoiled, entitled flower-children who experienced amazing prosperity thanks to nothing they did.

Gen X: Spoiled, entitled slackers who eventually experienced dot.com prosperity thanks to nothing they did.

Millenials, Spoiled, entitled tech-kids who will eventually experience prosperity based on nothing they did.

It is very hard to get a cab in Houston. This is the result of my exhaustive research of the city, which consisted in missing a connecting flight there and having to spend the night at the Marriott by the airport. By the airport is a bit misleading–the hotel is actually in the airport. Both convenient for travel, and proof that even people in Houston realize visitors to their city don’t want to step foot in Houston. You can literally get off your plane, get on the airport mono-rail and step off at the Marriott check-in counter without ever setting foot outside.

This would have been my goal, if it weren’t for the unfortunate closure of the Marriott restaurant, forcing me to venture out into the streets of Houston (though in truth, I’m not sure the Houston airport is really in Houston–I saw big buildings quite far away as we landed) to try and get some dinner.

You would think a hotel inside an airport would understand that people staying there are not from Houston and would have questions like “Where is the nearest place to eat?” and “Can I get a cab?” Unfortunately, no one I met was prepared to answer these questions.

It turns out, is almost impossible to find out where the nearest restaurant to the hotel is, though with some persistence you can get this info. And it is even harder to find a way to locate a cab. There are none hanging outside the hotel like you’d expect. The concierge after much consternation, decided that he could maybe call and see if a cab was in the area. And this was all easy compared to the task of getting a cab from the nearest restaurant (actually, it wasn’t the nearest–there was a Chili’s and a Waffle House, but I ended up and some steak joint where they serve you steak covered in foamy butter with a side cup of butter in case one stick wasn’t enough), which proved IMPOSSIBLE.

The hostess at the front was even more flummoxed by the request for a cab the the concierge had been. It seemed like she had literally never been asked by a customer to call her a cab ever. The cab company, once located, was equally confused. Yes, they acknowledged, they had 1 or 2 cars maybe in the area, but they weren’t sure how to get in touch with them. The process took an hour, during which I could only watch the band at Joe’s Crab Shack across the parking lot play to an empty patio in the 90 degree Houston humidity.

Let me just go on record and say no, Houston should not be able to host the Olympics until they figure out the value of having cabs around areas with lots of out-of-towners. Was Houston in the running to host the Olympics? I doubt it, but let me be preemptive in saying NO, NO, NO.

First, there was Stuff White People Like, which was a smash hit. Then, a lot of imitators that weren’t quite as cool. I think I finally understand how these things work, so here’s my contribution to the genre:

Stuff Bloggers Like

1. Luch. Bloggers are always up for a sandwich or getting a salad or something in between breakfast and dinner. You know you’re a blogger if it’s 12:30 pm and you’re like, “Hey, I feel like eating a meal right now.” LOL!

2. Reading. Bloggers love reading books or magazines or websites or e-mails. Not a day goes by where they don’t look at letters on a page (or screen–or street sign) and translate these letters into words which then form syntactical units of meaning. Crazy when you consider that almost all other living things other than bloggers NEVER READ!

3. Oxygen. Not the TV network, the gas which bloggers LOVE converting into carbon dioxide. You can set your watch to this one! ROFLMAO!!!

4. Harry Potter Books. This one is controversial, because it’s true not ALL bloggers love Harry Potter. But they definitely are more likely to LOVE Harry Potter than avant-garde poet Ann Lauterbach. Without fail, when given the choice between an obscure, barely known poet and a wildly successful book franchise, many bloggers will express preference for the latter. Harry Potter OBSESSED much?

It’s better to be lucky than good. But even better than being lucky is being bad. That’s the lesson we learned from Rebecca Black’s instant internet-hit “Friday,” a song so awful it inspired first mocking, then regret of said-mocking, then renewed mocking when Ms. Black started appearing on national TV, which in turn led to more regret.

Now, a self-published writer has found a way to turn poor editing and thin skin into big numbers with her “novel” The Greek Seaman, inspiring gleeful flames from across the net. Yet my similarly themed novel The Romanian Boat Guy garners barely a peep of response and why? Because it is awesome and people online only like things that suck.

Well, things that suck and babies who react in funny way to sneezes. And porn. And directions to places. But that’s basically it.

It’s just been a great week all around for bashing the under 18 crowd I guess. Complaints over the SATs including a question on Reality TV have led some to question the intelligence of high schoolers.

Drew Grant at Salon wins for best tween take-down with his response to a kid who claimed he couldn’t answer a question about how reality TV could be considered “real” when it is so heavily edited because he didn’t watch TV.

I’m sorry, but not being able to write about this pretty open-ended question without having seen any reality shows ever (or even know their basic premise) doesn’t mean you’re too smart for TV. It means you’re too dumb for this test.

This also brings to mind this classic Pulp Fiction scene.
